My Story

Painting makes me feel happy. As soon as I pick up a paintbrush it’s as if all is right with the world. I am inspired by the delicate shading of a flower’s petals and the way the light plays off the trees or water in a landscape. Portraits give me the chance to share my understanding of the subject. I paint in oils or water colors. While oils let me play with their luminosity and texture, and refine the colors of the paint with the brush, water colors emphasize the immediacy and integrity of the subject in the moment. I think of myself as a transplanted New Yorker, but having lived in the Los Angeles area for years, I’ve become spoiled by the southern California climate and paint while it’s sunny. The play of shadows on glass and china are intriguing to me. The ocean’s and sand’s various colors and moods are exciting. And, of course, using the photos of vacations to depict the scenes I loved, the meals I shared with good friends, and the laughter I remember make the moments alive again. I hope that viewers will see my work and feel the same delight as I did and want to surround themselves with the happiness I had when creating the work.
